From Plato to Descartes to Nietzsche, a concise yet illuminating history of Western philosophy.

A small marvel, A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO PHILOSOPHY provides a delightful introduction to Western philosophy. Despite its brevity, this beginner’s guide covers a vast range of authors and topics. The reader will enjoy discussions of ancient and modern philosophy, beginning with the pre-Socratic thinkers before moving to Plato and Aristotle.

The narrative then proceeds to an elegant survey of modern philosophers: Descartes, Nietzsche, Kant, and Hegel. Dominique finally confronts the problems that have occupied thinkers through the ages and persist today: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of freedom.

“Janicaud wrote this in a month for his daughter Claire who was about to begin studying philosophy in secondary school. It can be read with simple pleasure on this level, but its elegance of expression and exposition will appeal also to more mature seekers after enlightenment.” —The Times (London)

“Janicaud sees philosophy first as a habit of mind close to Plato’s original conception of the discipline as the best way of unmasking ideas.” —The Observer (London)

“Janicaud opens up his subject in the most immediate way I have ever seen.”

—The Daily Telegraph

“Enticing and charming. The yearning for, the seeking of, the attainment of knowledge is the fulfillment of our lives. This book points us in the right direction.”

—Good Book Guide

DOMINIQUE JANICAUD, a renowned French philosopher, taught at the University of Nice. He died of a heart attack after swimming in the Mediterranean in 2002, after only just completing this book, written to instill in his daughter a life-long love of philosophy.

SIMON CRITCHLEY is a professor of philosophy at the New School in New York City. He is the author and editor of numerous books, including the HOW TO READ series.
