iPhone App Review: Daphnée Paris AllChapters

iPhone App Review: Daphnée Paris AllChapters

March 16th, 2011 by

Those wanting to learn a new language on their iOS device have no shortage of options, but the Daphnee app from developers SwissKiss gives you a full suite of videos to teach you French in real-world situations, including quizzes, branching choices in the videos for different scenarios, and even the ability to ask any question and receive an answer within 24 hours. Learning a new language is never easy, but Daphnee tries to hold your hand and guide you through a set of real-world scenarios that is supposed to help you speak conversational French in a painless and fun way.

How It Works

Let me start off by saying that I think I have fallen in love with Daphnee. Her gorgeous smile, lovely French accent, and charming personality won me over from almost the first moment I started up the app. After sitting through a (non-skippable) introductory video, you are present with six chapters of video, leading you from your first meeting with Daphnee all the way through, ahem, the morning after.

There are phrases for all kinds of situations, and you are often given the ability to choose a different branch in each video. For instance, in a cab ride you are given the option to see responses that are formal or informal, and for “the morning after” you are given a set of phrases for a “good” night or a “bad” night.

Each chapter must be downloaded the first time you view it, the time taken varying depending on your internet connection. There is also an option in the menu for sending “Daphnee” an email and getting a response within 24 hours. I’m fairly positive that this is intended for customer service and support issues, though your mileage may vary. I encourage you to experiment!

Pros And Cons

The app packs a lot of quality French tutelage in one little app. The videos are very well done, and they really have found a charming and delightful tutor in the actress that plays “Daphnee”, an important consideration since you will likely need to watch these videos several times before you approach mastery of the basic phrases included. The quizzes help solidify the knowledge you’ve learned from the scenarios presented, though it seems like an app like this is best used in conjunction with some sort of book or class-based learning as well. It’s one thing to be able to spout a lot of French phrases but quite another to be able to understand what your conversation partner is answering in response.

The videos do have some awkward phrases included, especially towards the end of the “date” when you are getting close to “sealing the deal” with Daphnee. At one point she asks you, and I am not joking, “My boobs, do you like them?” While I think all men have at one point or another dreamed of hearing that question posed to them in a lilting French accent, I’m not sure that anyone ever has outside of a French soft-core adult film.

For $2.99 the developers have put together a nice collection of well-produced videos to help any French traveler learn some more practical phrases for their trip, especially if they are traveling stag. If you have the foresight to download all of the videos before your trip then this app may be a good way to occupy yourself on your flight to Paris, though be sure you don’t practice the questions about Daphnee’s behind or boobs out loud lest a nearby French speaker takes offense.
