The Gilbert and Sullivan partnership started in 1871 and lasted until 1896, W. S. Gilbert supplied the words and Arthur Sullivan was the composer. Their first production was Thespis and their last was The Grand Duke but sadly it was a failure.

Their best known works are H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance, even with their great success they found it very difficult to work with each other and after their partnership ended in 1896 they rarely spoke to each other.

The book contains the words for the script and songs by character for 9 of their most popular plays.
