iPhone App Review: Anatomy 3D – Organs

iPhone App Review: Anatomy 3D – Organs

October 12th, 2011 by

The human body is a robust, complicated machine. System upon system of moving parts and finely-tuned mechanisms work in tandem to enable us to (usually, hopefully) live long, healthy lives. Making sense of this complicated system is the tricky part, and to that end developer Real Bodywork have created an app (a series of apps, really) to make understanding the body’s workings fun and exciting.

How It Works

Anatomy 3D – Organs features 3D and video tours of all of the major organs of the body. From the main screen simply tap the organ you want to know more about, and you are brought to a  detail page with dense descriptions and a 3D rotatable model of the organ in question. Some sections include audio lectures that describe in greater detail the workings of the organ, and some have videos that show the specific structures in action. Each page also includes diagrams that you can zoom into and explore, and the app includes a detailed glossary including reference for over 320 structures. There is also a multiple-choice quiz for each organ of the body.

Pros And Cons

Anatomy 3D: Organs is a great interactive exploration of the human body. The reading material alone is almost worth the price of admission, but when you throw in the audio lectures and 3D interactive models then you really get an idea how the organs of the body work and fit together. There are only a handful of videos, which is a shame, but the videos included are interesting and enlightening. I hope they add more in the future, though the app size is already over 250 MB.

There isn’t much not to like about the app. The only thing that counts as a strike against it is just the sheer amount of information contained within. It’s almost too much to organize and present in a way that’s easy to digest. The developers have done an admirable job of presenting the information in a compact, understandable way, but the iPhone’s small screen is simply a drawback that can’t easily be overcome.

Anatomy 3D – Organs is a great introduction to the human body’s systems. By presenting the organs to you in several different formats, you really feel like you’re virtually exploring a human body. 3D models, video tours, and audio lectures all come together with the included text to create an integrated experience.
