iPhone App Review: Anatomy Quiz Pro

iPhone App Review: Anatomy Quiz Pro

February 23rd, 2011 by

The anatomy of the human body is an ever-changing assortment of skeletomuscular confusion that has confounded students of medicine for centuries. Okay, so it doesn’t really change all that often but there are hundreds of bones, muscles, and organs inside every human body and anatomy students can use all the help they can get quizzing themselves on their names and locations. Anatomy Quiz Pro is a flexible quiz-based study system that lets you study each system independently or create your own quiz based on the parts you need the most work on, and do quizzes with or without a timer.

How It Works

The app starts with a selection screen where you choose one of the three major areas of study: Skeleton, Muscles, or Organs. Selecting any of them takes you to a second screen, where you select one or more sub-areas to be quizzed on (Brain, Heart, Leg, Torso, Axial, etc.). You can also simply choose to study the full set of quiz items in each system, though it does not appear that you can study from all three systems all at once (you can’t do a little from organs, a little from skeleton, a little from muscle). Once you’ve selected the system and sub-systems that you want to study, you simply decide if you want sounds on or off, or whether or not you want to be timed, then hit “Start Quiz”.

Each question is accompanied by four possible solutions, and you must decide which of the four represents the answer that’s being shown at the top of the screen. You can do a long tap on a picture to get a closer look, and if you guess wrong you’re always shown the right answer in case the question comes up again.

Pro And Cons

I don’t know much about anatomy, but it seemed to me that the different options were always from a similar area of the human body as the real answer, making it suitably difficult to answer if you’re unsure about the solution. The illustrations used are all very high-quality and easily visible, with of course the above-mentioned option of a closer look if necessary for those smaller structures. The only downside I could really identify for the app is that, for the non-medically inclined like myself, studying muscle and organ tissue was kind of unsettling in a way that studying bones was not.

Anatomy Quiz Pro is a great resource and study aid for those of you needing a quick and easy way to pop-quiz yourself anywhere on parts of the human anatomy. Even if you’re not a medical student you may enjoy finding out how many parts of the body are fairly easy to figure out based on just their names (and the four options given) alone. Just maybe stick to the bones, the rest of the body is kind of squishy and disgusting, even in illustrated form.
