iPhone App Review: Anne Geddes MatchUp

iPhone App Review: Anne Geddes MatchUp

October 3rd, 2011 by

If you haven’t yet gotten your fill of adorable baby photographs, then the new iOS app from Anne Geddes may be just the ticket for you. Using the beautiful photography from the iconic artist, Anne Geddes has delivered a match game with three levels of difficulty, two-player support, several modes of play, slideshow mode for the photos that you’ve uncovered through play, and the ability to add new pictures through in-app purchase.

How It Works

The app is simple: from the main screen you make your game option selections, then hit “Play”. You can choose from three modes of difficulty, play yourself or with another player, do score mode or a time-challenge mode, or even be matched up with someone through online play.

The game itself is easy: tap to flip two cards, and if they match they are removed from the board and you take another turn. You get bonus points for chaining matches together, and bonus cards light up periodically for you to try and match. By doing well you can unlock new cards and slideshows, including pictures from Anne Geddes’ latest book Beginnings. Each level completed also reveals a new background image, which you can zoom in on to view in detail (or view on a large screen using AirPlay).

Pros And Cons

There isn’t much not to like about this game, unless you just don’t like sweet picture of babies and flowers and birds’ nests, in which case I don’t want to know you. The app includes three sets of photographs to play with, and you can purchase two others from within the app for $0.99 each.

The overall sound and image quality is absolutely stunning. Playing the game is like being in a Zen garden, except instead of raking sand you’re matching pictures of babies. The game puts to good use the artist’s beautiful images in a tasteful, organic way, making the app feel like a natural extension of the artist’s own work. Rather than being a way to cash-in on her work, MatchUp is a new way to experience it. It may not go as far or be as experimental as something like Bjork’s Biophilia, but that clearly wasn’t the point. Anne Geddes work has always been profound in its simplicity, and this app strives to do the same.

Overall

Anne Geddes MatchUp is a fun way to experience her beautiful pictures. The developers went the extra step of adding in online and multi-player capabilities, as well as utilizing AirPlay so you could view the images on a larger connected screen. Add to that fact that this is a universal app for all iOS devices (including iPad) and you have a great memory game for a great price.
