Its finally here! An app that is a fully functional, fully reliable, good looking alarm clock. I had the opportunity to use and review an app called awaken. Awaken is not a new program for Mac users but it is a new application for the iphone platform. This app is simple yet stretches the meaning of an alarm clock to fulfill expectations and then some.

Awaken Pros:

This alarm clock has four variations of an LED clock, one flip clock, and an 8-bit vision of the clock face for you to choose from. The alarm allows for a gentle fade in for waking up and a gentle fade out for a sleep timer. You can wake up to a song from your iTunes collection or from a selection of pre-loaded sounds that range from a standard buzzer to the Westminster Chimes. It has a little extra feature that you don’t get with a normal alarm clock; a flashlight that turns on when you shake the device. My absolute favorite part about this application is that it is reliable. I used Awaken in several different circumstances, trying out all of the features and it never failed.

Awaken Cons:

I searched around for a good con in Awaken and found small ones. The one thing that I do wish that this app had was the ability to switch it to a 24 hour, military style clock. Awaken has an, AM/PM setting but I know that there are some who appreciate having the military style clock face(My father, for example). This is something that would help this app to reach every consumer.  It would be nice to be able to customize the background picture to wake up or fall asleep to. Awaken also needs a way to snooze or turn off the alarm without having to unlock the device.

This app is a must have for the iphone enthusiast. If you have come to rely on the iphone for everything, as I have, this is just one more item that will make your day go by smoother. In comparison to other alarm apps out there this app smashes the competition.

– Looks great
– Customizable clock face
– Reliable alarm
– Selection of extra features

– Does not switch to 24 hour clock
– Can’t customize the background
– Has to be unlocked to snooze or turn off

I give this app a 9/10 for solid design and reliability.

Updates and Edits:

I reported that one of the cons of this app was that it did not have a way to switch to the military or 24 hour clock style. I was wrong. The app pulls the time directly from the devices clock setting. So if you have it set to military time in the settings of your device, Awaken will automatically switch to that style. Sorry for the wrong info.

Does this app allow for the time to be displayed continuously without touching the iphone. I understand that one would need to have a dock to supply power.

    You mean "My father"???

I'd say a con would be that it costs $1, versus the free alarm clock that comes with the iPhone.

Maybe, but can the free version play music from your iTunes to alert you. Also the extras that you get such as a sleep timer, a selections of faces and a cheesy night light that turns on when you shake your device make this app worth the $1. Just my opinion. And yes I meant "Father" good catch. D+ speller 🙂
