iPhone App Review: Babblemania Spanish

iPhone App Review: Babblemania Spanish

February 8th, 2011 by

Learning a new language is reportedly much easier to do as children than as adults, which I guess is why so many children’s programs inject a little international flavor into their educational aspects. Babblemania Spanish is an iOS game that uses fun, colorful characters and engaging mini-games to teach children the Spanish language in a fun, interactive way.

How It Works

In Babblemania Spanish your child will be introduced to Furley, a “Babble” that does most of the teaching. There are several different games to choose from, and after completing a game the player earns “Winner Badges” to mark their progress. Words that have been mastered are stored in the “Word Vault”, which is a sort of visual dictionary where kids can refer back to the words they’ve already learned.

The actual use of Babblemania vaguely resembles the popular series of language learning software for adults, Rosetta Stone. Furley first shows your child the meanings of several words in Spanish, then asks them to be picked out of the lineup upon just hearing the word. It’s a gradual learning process that was developed for Babblemania by a leading linguistics researcher.

This version is the first set in a planned series, and features 16 fruits and vegetables as well as a few other words.

Pros And Cons

The app itself is a great learning tool that seems structured in a way to engage children in learning in a fun environment. The animations for Furley are cute and well-done, but most importantly, so is the voice work. Furley’s spoken instructions are clear and understandable, which is not always necessarily the case in the children’s television programming that I’ve seen that features foreign language instruction.

The only drawback I found with this app was a plethora of loading screens: they were all very, very short, but there is a lot of “loading” being done. At one point I saw a “loading” message, followed by a static image with no speaking, followed by another “loading” message. There are a lot of graphic and sound files being tossed about under the hood in this app I’m sure, but I think a better arrangement of loading screens or simply a single loading progress bar per “load cycle” may create a better experience.

Babblemania Spanish is a great start to what looks like a promising series of fun, truly educational games for kids. I finally have a decent alternative to handing my son “Angry Birds” while we’re sitting in the waiting room.
