iPhone App Review: Baby Symbolizer

iPhone App Review: Baby Symbolizer

September 12th, 2011 by

Babies are apparently intrigued by high-contrast imagery and designs around their sixth week of development. Their developing eyes and brains are able to distinguish high-contrast better than solid colors and shapes, and black-and-white is as high a contrast you can get. Baby Symbolizer not only offers high-contrast artwork but also interactive images full of sights and sounds that can engage your infant and help their brains develop.

How It Works

The app includes two interaction modes: slideshow and interactive.

The slideshow is exactly what it sounds like: the app rolls through the included images automatically, playing the associated sounds as it goes. Interactive has two modes of its own: thumbnail and full screen. You can present the images all at the same time on the device’s display, or view them one at a time filling the whole screen. Touching the image inverts the black-and-white contrast and plays a sound. You can cause an image to zoom up to full screen mode even while viewing in thumbnail mode by holding it a tap for three seconds.

On the settings screen you can adjust the slide duration as well as the sound and music volumes. There is also information included on the research and safety behind the viewing of high-contrast images by infants.

Pros And Cons

Baby Symbolizer is a well-produced app that includes high-quality images and sounds. I’m unclear on whether or not I would let my infant handle my iPhone, regardless of how baby-friendly the currently-running app may be, but with the slideshow mode you can set up your iPhone or iPad in a visible spot and let the images fly. The taps that play sounds and reverse the contrast are responsive and effective, which is critical when the app is intended for use by infants. Everything about the app is well-done and very nicely produced.

Overall

Baby Symbolizer is a fun, interactive app for infants that can give them stimulation for their developing brains. You’ll have to make your own determination as to whether your iPhone can handle the drool and chewing that baby handling will inevitably result in, but it’s a great app at a great price.
