iPhone App Review: BeeSports

iPhone App Review: BeeSports

September 2nd, 2012 by

Throwing us back to arcade days of classics like Track ‘N Field, but with updated graphics and sounds, is the new game from developer Beemates Media, BeeSports. Furiously mash the screen to move your little bee’s feet in order to pick up speed, then tap the action button to jump, throw, hurdle, or do whatever it is you need to do depending on which of the 8 sports you are playing.

Featuring the 100m dash, 100m hurdles, long jump, javelin, weightlifting, triple jump, cycling, and 200m swimming, BeeSports lets you compete against two different opponents with different skill levels, The Lazy Lizard or the Furious Ant. If you manage to win gold you can share your results on Facebook and Twitter.

How It Works

Once the app starts up you simply select a sport and select your opponent. The Lazy Lizard is easier than the Furious Ant, and will put up less of a fight to win. Each sport has slightly different play mechanics, but the general idea is the same: quickly tap the buttons on either side of the bottom of the screen to “run”… or “swim” or “ride”. If you’re in a race that requires jumping, like hurdles or long jump, or that requires a throw, like the javelin, then there will also be a middle button to tap at the appropriate moment. The gameplay is simple and straightforward, but doesn’t sacrifice on the challenge.

Pros And Cons

There’s definitely something exciting and almost cathartic about madly mashing buttons on the screen to try and speed your bee along the track. The movement controls seem to be synced up well, because you can see and feel when your fingers are tapping in time to the running. Your bee will slow down if you’re not quite in tune, then pick up speed again as you pick up the pace.

My only complaint was with the jumping: the button is either too small or not sensitive enough, but in any event on something like the long jump it takes me several failed attempts before even making one successful jump. Like I said, I can’t tell if the button just needs to be made larger or if the sensitive area of the button is actually smaller than the graphic, but something seems off there.

BeeSports is a fun little bee-themed Olympics action game that lets you feel the excitement of competing in 8 different events. There is a free, ad-supported version with fewer events, and the full game is only $0.99. Limber up your fingers get ready for a real athletic workout.
