iPhone App Review: Catchif

iPhone App Review: Catchif

April 6th, 2010 by

I have to admit that sometimes I form opinions about apps based on my own ideas about what I want an app to do, rather than really looking closely to see what the developer was trying to accomplish. This is something I always have to be aware of and working against as I use these apps and try to describe and evaluate their implementation for reviews.

Catchif is one that I had initially dismissed because I did not quite understand why it could really be useful, until I read the developer’s own words on their website:

“Thanks to Catchif’s super powerful service, you and your loved ones will never get lost and will always stay close, no matter where they are.”

Since I’m actually going on a three-week long road-trip across the country in about a month, I realized that this app is a great tool to have in my toolbox for staying connected with my family the entire time.

The idea is simple: install this on your iPhone, and you can share your real-time location with anyone that has either the iPhone app or the Catchif Facebook app. They simply send you a location request, and on the iPhone an alert comes up through Push Notification asking if you would like to share your location. Hit “yes” and they know exactly where you are.

There is unfortunately no way to share your location from the Catchif Facebook app right now, but I asked the developer and they said they are working on that for a future release of that version of the app.

Catchif works well, it works very quickly, and it’s as accurate as your iPhone technology will allow it to be (if you have an EDGE iPhone then it will probably simply report your location as a triangulation between the nearest towers, so not so accurate).

Pros

  • Works flawlessly
  • Integrated with Facebook contacts if you enter your login info
  • Can withdraw yourself from the app (invisible mode) or block requests from individuals

Cons

  • Location sharing only works one-way: iPhone-out to Facebook (or other iPhone), not from Facebook out to iPhones or other Facebook Catchif users.
  • Currently very few users, but this may not be an issue if you are getting specifically for someone to be able to follow your location.

Bottom Line

This app may not be for everyone, but if you want or need people to be able to find out where you are on demand, then this app works perfectly.

Also, location can be tracked in real time, which means you can see your friends constantly moving on the iphone. Here is a video demo: http://www.vimeo.com/9851529
