iPhone App Review: Champagne Popper

iPhone App Review: Champagne Popper

January 8th, 2011 by

You ever go to a party and see that guy in the corner? You know that guy, the one tapping away on his iPhone, texting and FaceBooking and Tweeting, and not really socializing and certainly not meeting any women? You don’t know that guy? Well then that guy must be you, and according to the developer Elite Gudz, this app will solve all of your problems and let you get back to the party.

Champagne Popper is a countdown timer app and so much more. Pre-load messages so that you can send them all out simultaneously at the tap of the screen, “open” a bottle of champagne to get the celebration started, or just use it as a fun-filled countdown app that reminds you of times that you were more drunker.

How It Works

When you open the app you’re first forced to watch a few splash-screen advertisements, but once you get through that you’re home free. The main screen itself is basically a countdown, the ball in Times Square, and a big glittery “2011”. See, the app was designed with New Year’s Eve in mind, but other than the NYE iconography it’s pretty holiday-neutral.

I you just want to shake a virtual champagne bottle and pop the cork, tap “Celebrate” at the bottom menu. “Special Celebration” is where you can pre-load a message and a set of contacts, and at the appropriate time the app will notify you and prompt you to send out the message to everyone at once. “Options” is where you can set a custom countdown time.

Pros And Cons

The app really shows a lot of polish, especially for a free app.

A roughly 75MB download for what’s basically a countdown app is a bit excessive, but I guessall that space is taken up with virtual champagne bottles and glittery “2011”s.

Another nice thing is that the app uses push notifications, so if you set a countdown it will pop-up an alert and play a little champagne popping sound. It’s a nice touch.

The app is free except for “premium” champagne bottles, which are sold in the app for $0.99 each. You’ll need to buy one if you want to do a “Special Celebration”, but maybe that pays for itself if it really does get you back to the party faster?

If poppin’ champagne is your thing, or you just need a cool countdown timer with some bling, it won’t cost you a dime to try out Champagne Popper.
