iPhone App Review: Doodle Plane

iPhone App Review: Doodle Plane

May 23rd, 2011 by

Games with a “doodle” aesthetic seems to be cropping up everywhere in the iOS space lately, and probably with good reason. Doodly art is fun and accessible without automatically indicating that the game is for children. It actually takes a lot of care and attention to pull off a good doodle-style game, since the “doodles” can so easily get out of control and draw attention away from the gameplay. Doodle Plane is a fun little game with a good art style that gets almost everything right, despite having a few questionable gameplay choices. Read on for more details.

How It Works

You must navigate one of several styles of planes (fully selectable from the options menu) through different environments, ultimately attempting to successfully land on an airstrip at the end and progress to the next level. You have two controls: one stick to control altitude and another to control airspeed. Pretty much every single thing in the game other than your plane is dangerous, making each flight a challenging and exciting one.

Pros And Cons

The artwork and animation in the game is fluid and seamless. Developers Chitralekha Productions Pvt Ltd have done a fantastic job with creating varied, interesting environments using simple drawings and animations. When text appears on the screen, such as at the end of a level or after a crash, the text and animations clash and lend the entire screen an amateurish feel that is otherwise not characteristic of the entire experience.

Additionally, the sound and music in the game are very well done. They set a mood and tone that mesh well with the visuals to create a fun gameplay experience.

The gameplay itself is fun and light, the kind of game that should be played in spare moments and not be taken too seriously. Guiding the little plane throughout the level is challenging and at times hair-raising, though you’ll probably swear like I did the first time you crash into a cloud. Or the Moon. Or a bird. I mean seriously, some things should just be a part of the background, right?

Doodle Plane is a fun and attractive game for kids and adults alike. Minus some tweaking that needs to be done to the text displays and some questionable collision choices, it’s a perfect example of pick-up-and-play gaming for the iPhone.
