iPhone App Review: Drop Dead

iPhone App Review: Drop Dead

October 19th, 2010 by

If there’s one thing we will never see the eradication of in our lifetimes, it’s match three games. Don’t get me wrong, I”m as addicted to them as anyone and must do everything I can to keep them away from my iPhone, otherwise what little productivity I may have will be frittered away in the most frustrating way possible.

Drop Dead is thankfully a new twist on the match three genre. Taking the standard game and applying a zombie them (what isn’t better with a zombie theme, right?), Goofball Games has replaced the standard colorful icons that you’re trying to match with organs of the body. Hearts, spines, stomachs, kidneys, eyeballs… pretty gruesome stuff, and bloody fun to look at.

There are three play modes: Story, Endless, and Impending Doom. Story mode is the standard game where you progress through increasingly hard levels. Each level presents you with your avatar being chased across the bottom of the screen by a zombie: matches slow the zombie down, while delays cause the zombie to gain ground. You must match as fast as you can in order to escape and unlock the next level.

Endless mode allows you to choose your favorite level to play, but this time the zombie cannot be outrun. You just match to cause him to lose ground, but he will never go away, so delays while you scan for a move can cause the zombie to catch up.

With Impending Doom you simply make as many matches and score as many points as you can before the zombie catches you, the twist being that matches do not slow the zombie down. He makes steady progress until you’re caught.

Pros

  • The game is a fun twist on a classic gameplay genre.
  • The art style is dark and creepy, while still being cartoonish and light.
  • The game hits all the right tropes of the genre, like explosive organs when matching four or five in a row.
  • The music is atmospheric and sets just the right tone.

Cons

  • Some of the organs can sometimes be a challenge to tell apart, especially when one is “powered up” from a four-match. I’m thinking mainly of the stomach and the kidney.
  • The levels are a tad on the easy side until you hit about level 12, but even then they’re fairly simple. I guess that could be a “pro” depending on your style of play. Nobody likes to be frustrated when they’re just trying to relax and enjoy themselves.

Overall

Drop Dead is overall a fun matching game that should provide any fan of the genre with a welcome change from the typical brightly-colored jewel-matching style that the genre is known for. Those who haven’t yet dipped their toes into the waters of casual gameplay goodness would do well to start with this game, too!
