iPhone App Review: Electronics Engineering ToolKit Pro

iPhone App Review: Electronics Engineering ToolKit Pro

May 13th, 2011 by

Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying “Never memorize something that you can look up.” In that spirit, electronics engineers with iOS devices should take a long look at Electronics Engineering Toolkit Pro from developer Thomas Gruber. It’s a massive collection of 42 calculators spread over 4 pages, covering everything from trace width to parallel resistors to the speed of sound, and dozens more. There is a even the new addition of an automatic LED circuit generator, and I don’t know what that means!

Despite knowing nothing about electronics engineering, I feel confident that I can at least take a good look at the app itself and give you some idea how it works and whether it’s worth the $2.99.

How It Works

Within the app are pages of calculators and convertors. Tapping on an icon brings you to a screen where you can set the parameters for the calculation. The Speed Of Sound calculator for instance lets you choose distance and temperature, and it will then calculate the time that sound will take to travel. You can also enter the time taken and the temperature and the calculator will tell you the distance travelled. There is a slider for adjusting the significant digits of the result, and tapping the blue arrows on the right hand side adjust the units of measure (changing from feet to meters to kilometers, for example).

Each of the calculators is more or less identical to this, with sliders for adjusting accuracy and blue arrows for adjusting units of measure. The fields that you can change have black text, while the calculated fields have red text and cannot be altered. Each settings screen also has an Example button that will fill in figures for you, and an Info button that shows you the equations used to achieve its results.

Pros And Cons

If you’re an electronics engineer then there isn’t much not to like about this app. I found that the backgrounds and icons clash with one another, making the overall appearance of the app a little too “busy”, but had no trouble reading any of the text or operating any of the calculators. The app also does a good job of remembering your entries over multiple sessions, even after force-quitting the app, so you can bounce around to different screens and not worry about losing your work.

Overall

Electronics Engineering Toolkit Pro seems to have everything an electronics engineer would want at their fingertips, and at $2.99 is probably much cheaper than any book or shirt-pocket reference guide.
