iPhone App Review: Get Your Comic

iPhone App Review: Get Your Comic

March 18th, 2011 by

Reading comics on a touch screen device is a natural fit, giving you the ability to physically turn pages with the swipe of a finger as well as enabling creative ways to zoom and pan within the panels in order to make reading easier on the smaller screen.

Get Your Comic is a recent release from developer ITOCHU Technology , Inc., that is geared specifically towards Japanese Manga. You can browse for and download free titles from within the app or purchase premium titles from several publishers.

How It Works

The app’s main menu is very attractively designed like a series of comic panels, each clearly labeled. From the main screen you can browse the Free Comics, check out the Comic Shop, manage your profile, adjust the app settings, etc.

When you’re viewing comics in the comic store you can clearly see a thumbnail of the cover art, a basic description, as well as the average user review star rating. Tapping on the comic listing takes you to a more detailed screen.

The reading experience varies depending on the title itself: it seems that some publishers have put more effort into making their manga iPhone-friendly than others. If you’ve read comics on the DC or Marvel readers you know what the best experience is: double-tapping takes you into a “guided reading” mode in which every “page turn” actually zooms and pans to the next panel in the reading order. This gets particularly handy in a manga comic, especially if you’re not used to the Japanese style of reading right-to-left.

Pros And Cons

The app is definitely a great, easy resource for manga comics to read on your iPhone. The alternative to this sort of digital comic shop is to “acquire” them online then upload them to one of several reading apps, but the guided reading experience pioneered by DC and Marvel and used effectively in this app is truly amazing. I’m sure some people find it second nature to read right-to-left, but I sure don’t, and when I loaded up a manga that did not have that experience built in by the publisher it sure became confusing to read.

I’m sure the library is not as deep as what the big publishers’ apps carry, but this is a specialty reading app and has room to grow. The best part is that it’s free, so you have nothing to lose by loading it up and looking for your favorite manga, or maybe trying something new. There are also plenty of free comics and a lot of the other titles are only $0.99, giving you lots of reading material for free or cheap.

Get Your Comic is a very well-designed and easy-to-use app that brings manga to your iOS device any time you need it. With plenty of free and nearly-free titles to choose from and a great reading experience, there’s no reason not to try this app. Whether you’re a manga fan or want to dip your toes in the water, you have nothing to lose.
