iPhone App Review: Gifts

iPhone App Review: Gifts

November 1st, 2011 by

QUICK UPDATE: Since publishing this review the developer has pushed out a new update that adds several new occasions (including Christmas, which he says was missing before due to a simple bug), as well as the ability to search using a person’s personality as a search parameter. Pretty nifty stuff!

ORIGINAL REVIEW: As much as most of don’t want to own up to the fact, the holiday gift-giving season is just around the corner. Figuring out what to get for that special, or not-so-special, someone can be a daunting task, but Khalil Slimi’s new Gifts app aims to make the task easier.

Search through thousands of constantly updated gift ideas, browsing and sorting by recipient, occasion, price, category and keywords. Save great gift ideas into one of any number of custom wishlists for future reference, or share your ideas through email and social networks. Each gift idea has a description and price as well as a link to the store that offers it.

How It Works

The main engine of the app is the Gift Finder screen, represented on the bottom toolbar by the magnifying glass. Use as many or as few of the criteria as needed: select the recipient, occasion, price range, general gift category, and any keywords that may help the search turn up that certain item you’ve been looking for. Leaving more fields blank (or set to “any”) will yield more search results, and of course the more specific you get the less results you will see.

You can tap on a gift idea and save it to a Wish List, which you are prompted to enter a name for before saving. There is also a Top Picks tab that shows some featured items, as well as a link to the selling merchant click-able from every item description. There is also a Share button on each item, so that you can email the listing to any recipient or post it to Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Pros And Cons

I found the Gifts app to be overall a great gift-browsing experience. It’s not anywhere near as exhausting as trudging through a mall full of frantic shoppers, and offers a much greater variety of unusual or hard-to-find gifts. I found the gift selections to be unique across every price range, offering some interesting and unusual gifts at the lower price levels that I otherwise would probably never think of on my own.

The only odd thing about the app is its listing of gift-giving occasions: Christmas (or any other end-of-the-year gift-giving holiday, for that matter) is not represented at all on the list, but the Fourth Of July is right there at the top (which as far as I know has never been a gift-giving occasion). An interesting choice for an app that is all about gifts to exclude the number one gift-giving occasion of the year, but you can easily make up for that missing option by just searching using the “Any Occasion” or “Birthday” option.

Gifts is a great app for those of us that haven’t got a single gift-idea-thinking-up bone in their entire body. If you never know what to get for, well, anyone then you should definitely give this free app a try.
