iPhone App Review: Go Wild Birds 2.0

iPhone App Review: Go Wild Birds 2.0

March 3rd, 2011 by

The wild birds are back in a new 2.0 version that adds 20 new levels, new interactive objects, and some spit and polish in the form of better navigation and the ability to skip levels. To recap the point of this game from our prior review, you must help the hapless and apparently flightless fowl safely navigate their way to the ground, by tapping and destroying the wooden and stone supports they are standing on. Naturally the difficulty increases as the game progresses, pitting you against falling apples and indestructible boulders in your quest to finish all 40 levels.

How It Works

After navigating away from the start-up screen by hitting “Play”, you are presented with the level select screen (which is initially entirely grayed out except for level one). On each level you must carefully choose which board or stone to tap, destroying it and letting the bird or birds above it drop. If you let them drop too far they get hurt and the level automatically restarts. You can also swipe a bird to nudge it left or right, in an effort to place it in a more favorable position before pulling the proverbial rug out from under it.

Some levels get trickier with the addition of rolling indestructible boulders that can sometimes be used to launch birds across the screen on a makeshift catapult, or apples that fall from the trees above, knocking the birds on the head and ending the level.

Pros And Cons

The game is fun, blending cute birds with puzzle elements that require careful thought before even tapping the first wooden plank. The graphics are simple in a “South Park” sort of way, resembling paper cut-outs that are sliding across the screen rather than the slick animated birds of some other well-known top-selling iOS bird games. While the game is overall fun and interesting, it has the occasional strange random injured bird that comes seemingly out of nowhere, rendering the level a failure and necessitating a restart.

In the end I still think Go Wild Birds is a fun, interesting puzzle game that has plenty of gameplay packed in its small package. Aside from the occasional minor glitch and a sometimes frustratingly vague touch sensitivity, it’s a delightfully fun game with lots of play-time for the money
