iPhone App Review: ICEcare

iPhone App Review: ICEcare

November 24th, 2010 by

Preparing for emergencies or disasters is one of those things that everyone knows they should do, but rarely does. Emergency contacts, medical conditions, disaster procedures… all good things to have at hand in case of an emergency.

ICEcare by Corsoft Corporation is a free way to consolidate all of that essential information into one app. While the app itself stands on its own as a preparedness solution, when used together with the free services offered on their companion website it becomes a comprehensive emergency preparedness system.

How It Works

The app itself  allows you to enter personal information including blood type, allergy info, medical history, and any medications you may be taking. You can also enter emergency contacts into the app or dial 911 at the touch of one button. There is also a section with detailed information on emergency planning first aid, and disaster recovery.

The optional website component is where you can define a home emergency plan that can then be accessed by the device, order an ICEcare sticker for your mobile or a card for your wallet, or remotely delete ICEcare information stored on your mobile in case your device is lost or stolen.

Pros and Cons

The app is a bit rough around the edges, and seems to be primarily a user interface for a basic database and some web browser components. It’s not particularly fancy or attractive, but since it’s free and the developers specifically state on the website that your user information will never be shared, those are small complaints. The app starts up quickly, which is exactly what you want in an emergency situation.

The app is thorough in its personal medical information gathering (nothing like social security numbers or addresses, but basic medical information), but there are minor annoyances in the interface. Nothing that really gets in the way of using it, but finding particular menu entries to accomplish tasks (like adding new contacts to your profile) can sometimes be tricky.

In the end, ICEcare is a fast, free, and dependable app for storing and accessing emergency information. It does the job very well without any annoying effects or sparkly interface rhinestones getting in the way.

You know what, you're right! You can enter from the contact list. I'll remove that ding from the review. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have ICEcare on my iPhone and I can easily pick names and phone numbers from my contact list. It even provides an option list for defining relation, all to minimize manual data entry. Personally, this review does not make much sense. Who wrote it anyway?
