iPhone App Review: ID!

iPhone App Review: ID!

December 2nd, 2010 by

One of the First World Problems we have is the requirement to carry and safeguard countless bits of information and forms of identification. Driver’s license, passport, credit card, social security card, and more; all of these things are critical to our everyday lives, but by keeping them all in one location (your wallet or purse) you risk losing all of your most critical information at the same time.

The ID! app doesn’t stop you from losing your identification cards and sensitive information, but it is billed as a good way to keep all of that information backed up. By taking pictures of the things you need the most and storing them in a password-protected app, you can at least know that should you lose your wallet you will have copies of everything you need.

How It Works

The app is very simple: you take a picture of something, and it keeps it. You can take the picture from within the app or pull an existing photo from your camera roll. In the settings tab you can set an optional passcode lock on the app.

You can obviously store any pictures in this app, not just pictures of your identification and other important cards. If you have some post-its of website passwords laying around in a completely unsafe manner you can take pictures of them and store them in this app (as one app store commenter does), or keep any pictures that you don’t want people to have random access to.

Pro And Cons

The developer’s description says that this would be a great place to keep your ID for getting into a nightclub or to buy alcohol or cigarettes, but I kind of have my doubts that even a bouncer at a corner bar would accept a photograph of a driver’s license for entry into an age-restricted area. At least here where I live, most clubs and bars shine a black light on the ID card in order to better see the hologram. For legal reasons I doubt anyone selling restricted items like liquor cigarettes would take a photograph in lieu of actual identification, either.

There are however valid reasons for having photos of your wallet items with you. While you may not be able to use the photographs to gain access to bars or purchase contraband, should you lose your wallet it will help to have these things in order to start to put your life back together. You can also have your credit cards stored in the app: leave the physical cards at home to help curb overspending, but you have the information handy so you can purchase things online in case of emergency. If you get your wallet stolen while traveling you can book a Super Shuttle online using your smartphone, and never have to show the physical card, thus allowing you to at least get home to a warm bed.

One feature that would be nice to have is the ability to email pictures from within the app. At the scene of an accident having your photo ID, car registration, and insurance slip ready to email to the other driver can be a good, time-saving convenience.

The app does one thing and does it well: store pictures of whatever you want in a password-protected photo album. The uses the developer suggests may not all be practical, but I think there is a valid use for having critical information stored securely in case of an emergency. If this is something that you’ve been looking for or can see a need for, then ID! is the app for you.
