iPhone App Review: iVocAudio

iPhone App Review: iVocAudio

December 2nd, 2010 by

Remember memorizing your multiplication tables, or important dates in history, or a few useful phrases for that vacation in Italy? Studying pairs of information can be a challenge, the main difficulty to overcome usually being how boring it is to sit down and go over static information.

The iVocAudio app tries to make studying information easy and fun, and does so in a creative way by using your own voice.

How It Works

First you start a new project. You give your project a title and name the two categories. In my review of the app I decided to try and memorize all of Canada’s major holidays, so my first category would be “date” and the second would be “holiday”.

Once you have the projector container you must then jump over to the record tab. Here, you record your own voice saying each “couple”. In my example I hit “record”, stated the date, then stopped recording; then I hit “record” again, stated the name of the holiday, then stopped recording again.

Once your project and couples are complete, you use the app to help you memorize the information. The playback screen is unique if a bit unorthodox: you swipe a little air hockey puck to the left to start playback, then slide it up or down to indicate whether you know the corresponding answer or not, or slide to the right to hear the answer itself. The app continues playing one answer from each couple in a loop, tracks your progress, and quizzes you more often on the answers you do not know. It also switches things up: after a few rounds you’ll start being quizzed on the couples in reverse order, just to keep you sharp.

Pros And Cons

The app is rock solid and shows a lot of thought was put into its design. Although the use of the “puck” for control looks a bit odd, it works very well. It’s designed to be easy to use for children and for adults without looking at the screen, and does both jobs very well. The app is also good at tracking your progress on questions and putting the answers which you know the least at the top of the order.

My only tiny quibble with the app is the arrangement of tabs at the bottom, and the general way in which you put together a project. It seems like creating a project and recording the couples can be combined somehow into one step, since they are so closely related, rather than being separated into two tabs that are not even adjacent on the control panel.

Overall

Overall I think iVocAudio is a terrific app for helping you memorize things in a unique way, using your own recorded voice. The control scheme is funny looking, but does a great job at getting out of the way so that you can focus on moving your studies. Try the app out if you have anything to study that can be reduced to pairs of facts, you won’t be disappointed.
