iPhone App Review: Lake Como

iPhone App Review: Lake Como

March 6th, 2011 by

Travel guides have come a long way since the days of heading to your local AAA office and grabbing their guidebooks. These days you can literally have the entire experience of an exotic location resting weightlessly in your pocket, ready to guide you at the touch of a finger.

The Lake Como app from developer LuxExclusive packs the entire Lake Como area of Italy into an iOS app that will tell you the best places to eat, sleep, and relax on your fun-filled Italian getaway. At $9.99 it’s at the high end of pricing for any iOS app, so the question for this review is have they justified the top-shelf price tag?

How It Works

The app functions like you might expect: there are several categories of information like restaurants, hotels, and beaches. You can also take virtual villa tours or find the most romantic locations for a little private time. There’s even a “VIP Card” that you can get which will allow you to have access to a personal trip advisor that can help you plan the trip.

Pros And Cons

The app is full of what I assume to be valuable information, though without having the chance to personally visit Lake Como and try it out we’ll all just have to take the developer’s word for it. The information is well-organized and is presented in a way you might expect from a travel guide for a luxury Italian vacation spot. The virtual villa tours are handy to have before you plunk down dough for a vacation rental, though the quality of the virtual tour varies by location (which I assume is all about what the villa’s owners have included in their listing, which the developers really can’t do anything about).

The app also has the requisite “Nearby” button so you can find locations near you rather than combing through each section trying to find what you’re looking for.

While trying out the app I never experienced a crash, slowdown, or other bug, which considering the price is a welcome alternative to the usual buggy budget apps that are currently littering the app store.

While the price of $9.99 seems steep for an iOS app, this is a very specific guide that will not appeal to nor be required by many people. If you also take into account the fact that a travel guide in a bookstore would cost you probably double or more, along with the limited consumer appeal of a guide specific to just one location in the world, and the price no longer seems too bad.

If you’re traveling to Lake Como and can afford the restaurants, shopping, and nightlife that the area has to offer, $9.99 for a feature-rich travel guide doesn’t sound like such a bad deal.
