iPhone App Review: LastStandStan

March 2nd, 2011 by

One of the best things about an iPhone is the ability to always have a good game in your pocket. Having the ability to while a away a few potentially boring moments while waiting in an unexpectedly long line can be priceless, and a critical component of that contingency plan is having a game that you can pick up and put down at a moment’s notice.

LastStandStan is a pick-up-and-play shooter that places you in control of a rusty old guardian of the last Po’Trubian world as it is assaulted by relentless waves of evil Sleevils.

How It Works

The game itself can’t be any simpler. After choosing one of two game modes (Campaign or Survival), you simply tap the screen where you would like to shoot. Stan can’t move, he just spins and fires in the direction of your finger. You can tap Stan himself to bring up a selection screen, where you can equip shields, upgraded weapons, and a last-ditch nuke to clear things up when the going gets tough.

Campaign mode marches you through 20 levels of increasing enemy variety and difficulty, with regular weapon upgrades and boss encounters sprinkled throughout. Survival mode is simply an endless assault to see how high you can score before you’re annihilated.

Pros And Cons

LastStandStan has great production values in terms of its artwork and sound. While the enemies don’t all have the most original designs, there is a healthy variety of them and the icons and art are all high-quality.

The first few levels of the game are a bit too easy, but once things hit level four or so the difficulty starts to ramp up very well. The enemies start filling the screen and begin to make it very difficult to keep up with where your next shot should be placed. With gameplay mechanics to simplistic this style of game really shines when the action gets overwhelming, because at that point it’s all you can do to simply touch a bad guy to shoot at and try and decide which weapon is the best tool for the problem at hand.

The only thing about the game that turned me off was the fact that my finger managed to cover most of the enemies I was shooting at, making it impossible for me to see the resultant carnage as I blew them to smithereens.

LastStandStan is a wonderful game with great artwork that gives you a great, simple shooter to take with you wherever you go. There is also an update in the works that will add dozens of Game Center achievements, so this is clearly a game that has a supportive developer behind it.
