iPhone App Review: Live365 Radio

iPhone App Review: Live365 Radio

April 21st, 2011 by

Just a few years ago the only way to play music was to have one of many music playing devices, and to have the music physically on the device. Now that everyone and your mother have two iPhones and all of the other mp3 players have all but disappeared, there are several different ways to play music on the go without stuffing your iPhone’s storage to capacity.

Live365 Radio (version 2.0) is a new app from the folks at, a music-streaming website specializing in bringing thousands of radio stations to your desktop, and now of course to your iPhone. The new 2.0 version adds background-playing capability and the ability to email DJs through the app itself.

How It Works

I won’t pretend to know how the back-end of the app actually works… I barely know how radio works in the first place. Let’s just call it “magic” and move on to the app itself.

From within the app you can browse or search through thousands of radio stations playing hundreds of genres of music, news, talk, and more. You can browse by genre, check out the app’s recommendations, or just search through the catalog of stations and music. Free registration brings you additional features like being able to add presets, email track info from within the app, and contact DJs. There is also a paid VIP membership that grants you access to more stations and features.

Though there are a lot of great stations available through a VIP membership, the core functionality of the app is entirely free.

Pros And Cons

The most immediately striking thing about the app is the quality of the sound, even over a 3G connection, as well as the speed at which it buffers the stream. I found myself listening to a chosen station within 10 seconds or so, though over a WiFi connection you probably get higher-quality sound. Since these are radio stations we’re talking about I’m not sure I even noticed a drop in quality over 3G… it all sounded better than it ever does in the car anyway.

There are many stations shown that you can’t listen to, because they’re only available to VIP members. Joining isn’t expensive, but it ain’t really cheap either. The nice thing is that you can try out the app for free forever, and only join if you find it to be of value to you.

There are literally thousands of stations, across a broad range of categories. Think of the stations you can find in a typical urban setting from one end of the FM dial to the other, then multiply it all by a thousand, and that’s pretty much how many stations you have to choose from. A VIP membership not only gets you full access to all of those stations but also gets you ad-free listening. I’m not sure if that somehow exempts you from the ads on the stations themselves since, being radio stations, they must have commercials; or if that only gets you off the hook for the ads that Live365 airs.

Overall is a fantastic app to give you access to thousands of radio stations for free, with several great features for the added cost of nothing but a registration, and several more great features for a monthly subscription. If you like discovering new music the old-fashioned way but can’t find the mono headphones to your grandfather’s old transistor radio, this is the app to get.
