iPhone App Review: Make Me A Ginger

iPhone App Review: Make Me A Ginger

April 17th, 2011 by

For those of us out there that have wondered what it would be like to be a redhead (and let’s face facts folks, who hasn’t?), along comes the app that shows us all why the iPhone was invented in the first place. Make Me A Ginger lets you raid your camera or photo album for a picture of a face (or even a tree or a can of peas, if that’s your thing) and see what they would look like as a redhead. The app has several different hairstyles to choose from, and even lets you add freckles to the person’s face.

How It Works

The app first lets you choose a photo from the photo album or from your camera. Either way you are presented with an on-screen guide that shows a rough outline of a “face” with two dots to help you line up the eyes. Once your picture is taken you are then dropped into the “gingerize” screen, where you can add freckles, adjust paleness, select and size a hairstyle, and even adjust “redness”. Once you’re satisfied with the result you can share your masterpiece with the rest of the world through email, FaceBook, or Twitter.

Pros And Cons

The app is very fun and simple to use, and is designed in such a way that it seamlessly guides you from photo to finished product. Making your favorite person, pet, or loaf of bread into a redhead is more fun than you may think at first, especially once you start playing with the wilder hairstyles like “The X-treme Sportsman” or “The Late Night”. The graphics and final image quality are top-notch, even down to the placement of the freckles on the face. The app includes numerous little touches that make the process easier, like the aforementioned facial outline when photographing the face, or using a paintbrush to outline the face itself to assist in placement of the freckles.

The only issue I had with the app was a message that came up at launch telling me that I had too little memory to take a picture and would have to close other apps. It is nice that the developers took the time to create a meaningful error message and tell me how to fix what was wrong, but I’m not entirely clear why this is the only camera app I’ve ever come across that seems to have this issue. If you just close other running apps before opening up Make Me A Ginger, then it runs fine with no messages or other memory issues.

Make Me A Ginger is an entertaining and delightful app that will let anyone release their own internal redhead. It’s a clever idea done extremely well, and for the low price of $0.99 (I mean what isn’t $0.99 on the app store these days, besides the ridiculously overpriced Final Fantasy ports?), it’s a great bargain for anyone looking to have some fun at another person’s expense.
