iPhone App Review: My Baby Mobile

iPhone App Review: My Baby Mobile

December 30th, 2011 by

From developer HuggaMind, the team that brought us Baby Symbolizer, comes My Baby Mobile. Visual stimulation is essential to any child’s development, so My Baby Mobile provides you with both a virtual mobile and a set of detailed self-assembly printable mobile kits for you to make and hang over your baby’s crib. There is also a section on the benefits of visual stimulation as well as safety guidelines for hanging the mobiles.

How It Works

The app has two functions. The virtual mobile can be used as is, if you feel like handing your Apple device to a baby (or hooking it up to the TV), plus there are two printable mobiles. Each mobile features color and black-and-white high-contrast patterns, along with detailed instructions for assembly and multiple options for printing.

Tapping the icon on the main screen that looks like a sheet of paper takes you to a page where you select which mobile you would like to print. The instructions provided are divided into sections, with a listing of materials needed at the top of the screen.

At the bottom of the instructions screen are the list of options for printing each mobile: an Airprint-enabled printer, third-party mobile printing apps (with a link for download and setup instructions provided), and the option to print directly from your computer. You are given a unique password that enables you to log in and download pages for printing directly from your computer.

You can follow the directions right on your device, or print out the entire set of instructions along with the materials and do it that way.

The app also includes basic settings for adjusting volume, some links for sharing the app via popular social networks, and research on the efficacy of the concepts behind the app (complete with cited sources). The safety tips included cover not only the creation and hanging of the mobiles created by this app, but also for other baby-related issues such as strollers, changing tables, pacifiers, and other topics.

Pros And Cons

As with HuggaMind’s other app (reviewed here as well), the quality of the sounds and images in My Baby Mobile are superb. The patterns are designed using research-based principles that are intended to help provide visual stimulation and encourage myelination of brain cells. I didn’t know what it meant either until I looked it up within the app!

The ability to print all of the directions at once before starting is a thoughtful inclusion, as well as having a dedicated website that gives you the ability to print materials from any computer. Even little touches like having a complete list of materials on one screen are welcome, and instill the user with confidence before starting the project.

My Baby Mobile is a terrific and inexpensive app that not only provides a virtual visual stimulation solution, but also gives you two high-quality mobiles to hang over your child’s crib, which you may even have fun putting together. If you take enough care in assembly and use high-quality paper, you get two attractive mobiles for $0.99, which any parent knows is a terrific deal.
