iPhone App Review: My Shot Lists For Travel

iPhone App Review: My Shot Lists For Travel

February 22nd, 2011 by

Taking decent pictures is only half the battle when it comes to travel photography. What we all probably hope to accomplish is to somehow distill the essence of the location and the entire travel experience down to a set of pictures that we can share with everyone we know. The problem is that we all have our own idiosyncrasies about what we choose to shoot, and when we get back home we wind up with a camera roll full of pictures of things we probably could have skipped, and a head full of memories of things that we wish we had taken more pictures of.

My Shot Lists For Travel is a new app by author and photography instructor Ralph Velasco that aims to solve this problem by giving you a shot list for locations that will help provide a well-rounded travel portfolio for each location that you visit.

How It Works

The app is basically a database that acts as a reference and a reminder for what kinds of pictures to take while traveling in a particular location. For instance, the “City” section contains categories on Architecture, Landmarks, History, and Night Scenes (as well as over 30 more), with an example picture in each category. The idea is to try and capture a handful of representative shots for each category and then to check it off once completed. By completing as many of each category as you can for the location, you will wind up with a better and more varied portfolio of pictures for that location.

The app includes several sample locations: besides City there is National Park, Safari, and Town or Village. You can also create your own custom list from scratch or by using one of the existing lists as a starting template (using the City list if you’re traveling to Paris, for instance). You can view sample pictures and a brief description of each category, and also enter your own pictures and data.

Pros And Cons

The app is very simple to use, being as it’s basically a reference tool for what types of pictures to strive to collect while in a particular location. The ability to use the existing lists as a template for a new one is a great feature, though it would be nice to be able to delete those lists from the main list view and still use them as templates (you can delete them if you no longer need to see them, and restore them if you want them back, but a deleted lists will not show up as a selectable template when creating a new list).

Another nice feature is the example photo and description given with each photo category. This can give you some basic guidance and inspiration when trying to decide what to shoot. If you decide that you no longer need these examples you can flip a switch in the Settings app and they will be tucked away behind your own custom photos and notes.

There is also a “Challenge Me” button on each list that will pop a random category to the top for you to work on, as a way to get your creative juices flowing if you’re stuck for an idea.

My Shot Lists For Travel is a handy photography app at a great price that should help any photography amateur get a better set of pictures out of their next trip.

    Hi Drew,

This is Ralph Velasco, creator of the My Shot Lists for Travel app. Thanks for a very thorough and fair review.

Just wanted to address your one comment about using existing shot lists as a template. Users can rename or delete the predefined shot lists (e.g. City, Safari, etc.) if they don’t want them in their list. Then, when they want to create a new shot list based on one of the default lists, they can restore it and then rename it however they like.

    Hope that clarifies things.

    All the best,
