iPhone App Review: Pocket God

iPhone App Review: Pocket God

February 24th, 2009 by

There are a few simulation games in the app store, but so far a lot of them are lacking.  What’s nice about Pocket God is that it isn’t some huge game with long load times or laggy screens.  You have the ability to basically torture poor islanders who you can create and destroy at will.  It has a very easy to learn interface. With a + in the upper left to add villagers and just finger commands to grab, drop, throw, or incinerate them with lightning.

The game definitely has draw backs.  For one, you can essentially do everything in a very short time.  While it says you can be a benevolent God, it is very difficult to do much beyond torture the islanders. You can feed them, but it is much more fun to feed them to the volcano.

What gives the game potential is that the author(s) add new “challenges” every so often.  Challenges like “play for five minutes”.  While they some times aren’t as creative, you can tell the people making the game enjoy it so much that they are constantly adding to it.  This game has a lot of future potential.  Considering the cost of $0.99 it’s a great buy to keep you entertained waiting in line for your Café Mocha. It is amazing how much fun you can have throwing islanders into the water and watch them squirm.

The updates are just another feather in the cap on this one. Can you seriously name a single game that is more interesting to look at than this? Such great animations and art direction. Runs smooth as silk and sounds fantastic on top of it all.

Love this app because of its updates. You don't have to pay to view a new episode and therefore get all the goods at once. Takes up a lot of battery but cloud jumping is good fun!

Can't complain, fun and only .99 so I guess its the type of app user you are, short and fun, or mind-numbing and hard, yet fun…
I like it but as much as they update I still loose interest in it shortly…
    good effort

I agree with brandontreb. This game was fun for the first five seconds and then it was just lame. The graphics are pretty amazing for such a simple game. But this isn’t something I go back to over and over again. I bought it because it looked cool/cute and was immediately disappointed. I played for 10 seconds then quit. Now the I see the icon every once in a while on my second page and remember what a waste of $ (as little $ as it was) it is.

It probably depends on what kind of person you are. I am having lots of fun flicking islanders into the sea over and over. Lets remember, this is the app store where iFart became a huge hit… the people who are “enjoying” these app’s might find bowing for islanders to be endless fun.

Still, it is true, you can do everything pretty quickly.

This game is fun…for like 10 seconds. It has no overall goal and very low re-playability. Very nice graphics though.
