iPhone App Review: RateThis!

iPhone App Review: RateThis!

August 14th, 2011 by

If you’re looking to make a difficult decision between two photograph-able options, then a new free app from CookieJar Solutions called Rate This! may be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Snap a photo of two different, you know, things, and then submit them for the wisdom of the crowd to decide. If you have a few minutes to kill you can even fire up the app and vote on a few choices yourself. Once a choice has been made you can share your results via Facebook and Twitter.

How It Works

The app has basically two features: rate choices yourself, or submit your own choice to be rated. You must first create a (free) profile before being able to upload your own pictures for voting.

Rating others decisions is as simple as tapping “RateIt!” on the main menu and then just tapping which of two options you prefer. Making a choice instantly brings up the next decision for you to rate, and if you need a closer look at something you can tap and hold a picture in order to make it larger. Double-tapping the full-screen pic brings you back to the decision page. If you accidentally make a choice that you don’t like you can swipe back to a previous question and choose the other option.

Tapping “NewRate!” on the main menu is where you can create your own set of options for others to rate. Snap two pictures or select two from your photo library, select a category to include the photos in, and give a descriptive title to each option. Select how long you would like the decision to be available, and then kick your options out for the rest of the world to vote on.

Selecting “MyRates!” on the main menu will let you review how your selections are faring in the voting process. “Rated!” lets you review the ratings that you have made on other’s uploads.

Pros And Cons

The app itself really has no drawbacks. It has a stellar interface with original menu effects that give it a stylish feel without being over-the-top. Creating a profile and uploading pictures for your own rates are both fast and painless processes, and the ability to set a customized timing for each decision means that you won’t have to wait four days to find out if you should have a burger or hot dog for lunch.

The pictures in the app are on the small side, which is fine for deciding between two different pairs of shoes or seeing two different movies, but doesn’t help you out in the “photography” category when trying to decide between two different pictures. You also can’t get anyone’s input on things that can’t be photographed, so if you were hoping to crowd-source your decision on whether or not to divorce then you’re going to have to dig a little deeper inside yourself and decide on your own.

Another nice touch is that pictures can be flagged as objectionable, hopefully keeping the off-color photos out of the service. Making a “game” of sorts out of the app might be a fun way to improve it later on, by adding badges for voting and the ability to give feedback to voters on the decisions they’ve made (in a hopefully anonymous way).

Overall

RateThis! is a fun social photography app that lets you toss (hopefully not very meaningful) decisions out to the universe. It’s free to download and the service is free to use, so check it out today.
