iPhone App Review: SARI

iPhone App Review: SARI

April 3rd, 2011 by

The Sari is a several thousand year old strip of cloth worn draped over the body in any one of over a hundred different styles, and is for most people a very intimidating and complicated garment to properly put on.

The new iOS app SARI ~ A step-by-step Sari drape tutorial attempts to demystify the process of wearing a Sari, in at least one of the more common urban fashions, using five simple steps and accompanied by a video tutorial. The aim of the app is to make it simpler and less daunting to properly don a Sari, and since the video is embedded within the app, to be able to have it with you wherever you go.

How It Works

The app consists of three main parts (plus the obligatory “About Us” menu option.

  • “Steps” guides you through the draping of the Sari in words and illustrations.
  • “Tutorial” is the video version of the same instructions, a guided tour that leads you through the five steps with a live guide.
  • “FAQs” is, surprisingly, a set of frequently asked questions that cover things not covered in the guide, such as what to do if the Sari starts to come apart (there’s a name for it, “Sari migration”), how to wear a Sari in order to produce a slimming effect if you have a heavier, and more.

Pros And Cons

The written instructions are clear and concise, but only if you’ve watched the video first. While I may not be the target audience for their average Sari wearer, I was fairly lost in the written section until I’d watched the video, which makes the donning of a Sari seem fairly simple (though I’m sure it takes quite a bit of practice to do it so effortlessly).

While wrapping a Sari seems in theory to be rather easy, it’s one of those things that you can’t really read about on a page and expect to understand, which is where the video comes in. It does a great job of visually expressing the concepts described in the instructions, and after watching it you can use the written instructions as an effective reference.

The FAQ section had some very useful miscellaneous information that couldn’t reasonably be covered in a basic instructional video format. I would definitely recommend reading it.

The app is a very good resource for what it sets out to do: instruct you in how to properly drape a Sari in a very popular style. What would be nice is if the developers could update the app with optional (free) in-app downloads of other ways to wear a Sari, so that women interested in branching out can try different styles. All in all this is a great app if you’re interested in an effective and portable reference for how to wrap a Sari.
