iPhone App Review: So You’re Dating A Vampire

iPhone App Review: So You’re Dating A Vampire

November 21st, 2011 by

So you’re thinking about downloading So You’re Dating A Vampire? Described as “The Comedy Film Date You Create”, Neutral Ground Films latest endeavor is a “choose your own adventure”-style short film in which you guide the main character, “Grace”, as she gets ready for and then goes on a date with “Vincent”, whose status as a vampire is in question. You watch as the story unfolds and then make choices for Grace throughout the show, your choices of course determining how the story ultimately plays out.

How It Works

So You’re Dating A Vampire functions like those old books which told you to “turn to page XXX” after making each decision. The gameplay here is basically limited to choosing one of two options at predetermined points throughout the story, giving you several different story paths to follow and different endings to achieve.

You can pause the videos during playback, rewind to watch the current section over, and jump ahead to the next choice point if you are re-playing the video and trying to achieve a different result (and don’t feel like watching the same clips over and over).

Pros And Cons

With an app like this there is really very little for me to review, so long as the features of the app work and work well. Allowing you to pause and skip sections of video may seem obvious but I have reviewed many apps that leave out seemingly “obvious” options, so the developer’s decision to let you have that control was a very good one. You can also continue your last game from where you left off, which also falls into the category of  “obvious design choices that you don’t notice until their left out”. Thank you!

The production values of the short film (because that’s basically what it is), while obviously not up to Hollywood standards (nor should they be, or the app would be far more than $0.99-$1.99), are actually quite good. The picture and sound quality are excellent. In independent films the most noticeable flaws are in the areas of lighting and sound, and the production company shooting the video for this app took care to ensure that the lighting and audio were perfect (even going so far as to advise you to listen to the game with headphones, which shows remarkable confidence in the audio quality). The acting was good, though I felt moments in some of the scenes could have tighter and more focused. Overall it appears that time and care was taken to be sure that the video quality did not make itself a distraction from the storytelling.

So You’re Dating A Vampire is a fun, interactive story that should provide a bit of entertainment that’s different from the standard App Store time-wasters. It is available for iPhone for $0.99 and in an HD version for iPad for $1.99 (though curiously both are marketed as universal apps, so be careful that you buy the right one).
