iPhone App Review: TableTopics Mobile

iPhone App Review: TableTopics Mobile

February 5th, 2011 by

Do you spend lots of time with uninteresting, unintelligent people that never seem to have anything worthwhile to talk about? Are you planning on becoming trapped on a desert island with a partner, yet plan on somehow possessing a working iOS device? Do you talk to yourself frequently yet find that you have little to say? TableTopics is a new iOS game that can breathe new life into your stale social situations.

TableTopics Mobile is based on the card game, the real card game. You know, with actual cards and stuff?

How It Works

Downloading the TableTopics game gives you access to two included card sets of questions, with in-app purchase available for several more. You just select a set of cards and zip through them one by one, using the included questions for conversation starters. You can browse by card, browse a list of the deck’s questions, hide questions that you don’t like, and even create your own questions.

The purchasable card sets are sorted around common social situations, like “First Date” or “In Flight”. You can sample a few questions from each set before purchasing.

Pros And Cons

The game overall is a faithful recreation of the real-world card game experience, minus the physical cards. The design and interface for the mobile version live up to the beautiful and simple design of the decks of cards that the game is based on, bringing the elegance and simplicity of the original to the iOS platform.

The ability to create your own cards and shuffle them into the official questions gives this mobile version a leg up on the physical card game, and the ability to hide questions that you dislike is a thoughtful inclusion.

The pricing however is the biggest “pro” of them all. The physical card game typically retails for around $25, while the iOS version is just $2.99 and comes with two sets of questions. Other sets can be purchased in the app for $1.99, making this a steal compared to the original game.

Those looking for a trivia game should keep looking, because the questions on these cards have no answers other than the ones you and your guests supply. This is a game for a group of people looking to have a fun, lively discussion, or for those looking for a creative way to break the ice with a group of relative strangers. It’s even a terrific app to have on long car rides, as a very welcome alternative to the ever-tiresome game of “would you rather?”

It’s simple and well-done, easily worth the money, and lets you leave your existing deck of TableTopic cards at home the next time you go out.
