iPhone App Review: Tap ‘n Cap

iPhone App Review: Tap ‘n Cap

September 24th, 2010 by

If you’ve ever heard of the internet and/or have an email account, then you’ve undoubtedly seen captioned pictures that are supposed to be funny. There is an entire network of sites dedicated to pictures with captions: LOLCats, I Can Haz Cheezburger, FAIL Blog, and the like. One thing all of the pictures have in common is that magical, mystical, immediately recognizable set of fonts.

Well now you can create those kinds of pictures in seconds with Tap ‘n Cap, a new iPhone app that lets you snap a picture, caption it, and share it easily.

How It Works

When you start the app you’re presented with the Help screen, which shows you the basic steps to getting an image into the app and adding and manipulating a caption. Simply tap Get Pic to grab a picture from the Photo Album or snap a new one, then tap Caption to type the caption. You can drag the caption around the photo easily, resize and rotate it with the standard two-finger gestures, and double-tap the caption to change the font. When you’re done, tap Finished to email the photo or share it via email.

  • The app is stable and runs smoothly.
  • The icons are clearly designed and labelled and make the process of captioning a picture easy to understand.
  • There is a huge selection of custom fonts to choose from.
  • The settings screen has exactly what I would ask for in this app: take a look at the screen shot. A variety of settings to customize the app the way you want, and they’re easy to understand.
  • Though the colors and design of the app may sound crazy (orange text and icons against green grass and blue sky background?), somehow it just works. It’s fun and goofy, just the way it should be when making LOL pics.
  • The app itself is just fun to use: the default “LOL” font on any picture somehow makes it interesting, even if it’s not!

  • Not a big deal, but the arrangement of icons on the toolbar seems off. It would seem to me to make more sense to be in the order “Get Pic – Caption – Clear – Finished”, then to have Help and Settings (or to simply have Settings on the toolbar and have Help be an option within Settings). That may be just me, though.
  • The app seems to down-scale the picture quality. This makes sense if you’re emailing the photo, but if I’m saving it to my Photo Album I want it to be at full resolution (or to at least have that option, if my device can handle the memory load). (THIS IS ALREADY LISTED ON THEIR WEBSITE AS AN “UPDATE IDEA”).
• While we’re talking about emailing photos, I wish their were more sharing options than just Save and Email. Heaven knows I don’t want to encourage the propagation of these things all over the internet, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to share the picture on Facebook or Twitter straight from the app? (AGAIN, THIS IS ALREADY ON THEIR LIST OF UPDATES).

Though you may be able to tell that I’m not a HUGE fan of “LOL” pictures (although I’m not totally heartless: this is one of my favorite pictures of all time), I did love this app. It’s super-simple to use, runs quickly (on my device anyway), and aside from the scaling issue I mentioned, the resulting pictures look superb.

Go forth and LOL your friends and family until they beg for mercy!
