iPhone App Review: Time Machine Jump To The Future

iPhone App Review: Time Machine Jump To The Future

August 23rd, 2011 by

If you’re curious as to whether your new bride is really going to look like your mother-in-law in thirty years, you can download Touch Multimedia’s new app “Time Machine Jump To The Future” and see for yourself. Incorporating amazing technology that I can reasonably classify only as magic, it allows you to take a photo and age the person’s features. It’s really quite spooky.

How It Works

First you choose the gender of the person to be aged, then either choose a photo from your device’s library or snap a new picture. As with other face-altering apps you must then line up the face so that the effect can be carried out properly. This is a two-step process: first do a rough lining up of the face in the picture to an onscreen facial outline. Then you tap and drag two eye markers and the lip marker to where the eyes and lips are on the photo itself. Once that’s all done you simply hit “Start” and watch as time and space are warped and the photo is aged.

Once the photo is done you can swipe back and forth along the timeline and see the picture in various stages of aging, save the photo, share it on Facebook or through email, or if the effect didn’t come out so well you can re-align the targets on the eyes and lips and start again with the same picture.

Pros And Cons

Time Machine not only does a great job of realistically (in a fun way) aging your photos, but the app itself looks good while doing it. You get the feeling that you’re operating a sort of steampunk time machine, complete with knobs and levels and switches, that catapults you through time and gives you a glimpse of what you or your loved ones might look like aged to perfection. It’s all smoke and mirrors of course, just a simple effect done around the eyes, forehead, and mouth, but it’s done so well that when you get a perfectly-taken and aligned photo it really does produce an uncanny effect.

Unlike similar recent photo-retouching novelty apps we’ve reviewd, there were no “out of memory” warnings, no issues with crashing, and no failure when launching the in-app camera to take a picture. Other developers should take note: this is the proper way for a camera-centric app to behave.

Overall

Time Machine Jump To The Future is a great novelty photo app that produces fun aging effects, and does it in a fun way. There are no guarantees that your loved ones will be happy seeing what they might look like at 60 or 70, but it’s up to the end user to exercise good judgment when traveling through time with this app.
