iPhone App Review: Tracknburn

Getting and staying in shape are tough enough tasks on their own, but they can be made easier if you have specific goals in sight, as well as knowledge of some basic fitness facts. Tracknburn by Healthy U Technologies tries to make setting and keeping goals easier by giving you the ability to track your food intake and exercise regimen, all in the palm of your hand. The only real outstanding question is “How well does it work?”

How It Works

When you first start the app you are asked to set some basic information as well as your fitness goals (which you can change at any time in the app’s Settings): gender, age, weight, height, and a general daily activity level; you can choose a desired weight as well as the weekly change (plus or minus) that you’re shooting for; a daily water intake goal; after all of which the app suggests the top 3 nutrient values (which you can of course change as well).

Once you’re through with all of that initial setup, you get into the main screen of the app. Each day you can Track your caloric intake, record your workout under Burn, record your weight, and record your water intake. You can freely scroll through the days (past and future, though I’m not clear why you need such unfettered access to the future).

The Track and Burn sections each have detailed databases of food and exercise, respectively. When tracking food you can search the database of foods and restaurants for what you’ve eaten, create a custom meal so that you can reuse often-eaten creations (I tend to have the same breakfast each morning), create a custom food, or choose from a list of favorite and recent foods.

When recording your exercise routine you have a choice of Strength, Aerobic, and Sports. You can also just hit the Quick Add button, type a name for the exercise, and record your estimated caloric burn.

There is also a Log section that gives you detailed access to your past entries, including the ability to email CSV files of your food and exercise entries at the touch of a button.

Pros And Cons

The app is very well thought out, and leads you through the daily routine or recording food and exercise intuitively and smoothly. There is a minor response issue when recording your water intake that the developer is aware of, and they are working on a fix for the next release.

The app has a fairly robust database of foods, restaurants, and exercises. Should you find yourself spending 2 hours “Laying Sod” on a Saturday afternoon, Tracknburn knows that you burned upwards of 2000 calories (well, I would have anyway). Mowed the lawn, paddled a boat, had sexual activity? Yep, all here.

The pantry is well-stocked too, though the brand-name search is a bit hit or miss. Weetabix is in there, but Cinnamon Toast Crunch is not. Not much of an issue since the calories are listed right on the box (so you can just add it yourself under “Custom Food”), but just know that the database isn’t 100% comprehensive. The restaurant listing is a similar story: Denny’s, Panda Express, Skyline Chili? Check. Cracker Barrel? Whoops, no sign of it. To be fair though, I had never heard of it myself until I drove across the country.

Overall

Tracknburn is a great companion app for tracking your food and workout, and keeping you on task towards your fitness goals. I should warn you that the developers charge extra for the over-the-air backup and restore function, but you can get your info out of the app in easy-to-manipulate CSV format free and easily. If you’re looking for an exercise companion app, Tracknburn is worth a good look.
