iPhone App Review: Weatherwise

iPhone App Review: Weatherwise

August 27th, 2011 by

I never cared more about knowing the weather than the day I bought my first smartphone. It’s almost like having access to the information makes you crave it even more. For the first time in years a developer, Local Wisdom, has taken it upon themselves to re-imagine the humble weather app and brought us Weatherwise.

With different original themes, 3-D perspective effects, Sun and Moon graphics, and hour-by-hour details, Weatherwise is not only beautiful but functional and innovative.

How It Works

Weatherwise’s basic functions are like any other web app. It can store up to five locations, and it will tell you the current weather conditions, plus a 5-day forecast and hour-by-hour conditions for the next several hours. Where Weatherwise differentiates itself is in its presentation of the weather information.

The default skin is a picture of a tree in a quiet garden, with a lantern and a birdhouse hanging from its boughs. The picture changes based on the weather conditions reported, giving you an instant and unmistakable graphical look at the weather that goes beyond the typical sun and clouds icons in most weather apps.

If its foggy outside, the tree will be shrouded in fog and the lantern will glow faintly in the mist. Windy conditions will cause the lantern to blow from its hanging position on the tree limb. Rain and snow animate beautifully, and the cloud graphics reflect the weather report. A setting in the options menu will show sunrise, sunset, and night themes in the app as well. A useless though beautiful effect is that as you tilt the iPhone from side to side, the bushes in the foreground and tree in the background display a simulated parallax view.

Pros and Cons

Weatherwise is a beautiful and different way to look at the weather. While other apps pile on features like doppler radar and weather alerts, this app presents the essential weather information in a way unlike any other app in the App Store. If the tree doesn’t turn you on there are paid themes available that add more visual interest and even more innovate ways to visualize the weather.

Overall

Weatherwise is a creative, innovative, and exciting way to get the weather on your iPhone. At the rock-bottom price of free for the default them it is a must-have app for any iPhone owner.
