iPhone App Review: WFN Fishing Log

iPhone App Review: WFN Fishing Log

February 11th, 2011 by

One of the greatest traditions of fishing is the story that goes along with each catch: where you caught it, what tumultuous weather you had to endure, and of course the final picture of the victorious angler with his prize guppy dangling from the hook. The World Fishing Network has just made capturing all of these details easier with their new app, WFN Fishing Log. If you’re a fisherman and have an iOS device, this may be what you’ve been looking for.

How It Works

The app is centered around capturing your information in the My Trips section: each trip includes your location, the weather, the tools you’ll need, and the catches you bring home. You can then access your maps, catches, and tools from their respective options on the main menu, but setting up a trip initially is the best way to go.

When you start the app you can sign in or create a WFN account, or simply use the app without an account. When you enter “My Trips” you can create a Basic or Advanced trip, the advanced option simply giving you the ability to enter more detail on some of the screens.

When you create a new trip you tap on the “Overview” option to title the trip, set the date, set the location, hours you were out, etc. You can then go to the “Weather Conditions” section to set either basic or advanced weather data, depending on what kind of trip you initially selected. Then comes the good part, “My Catches”, where you can take a picture of each catch, set their species, list what kind of bait and gear you used to catch it, and more if you selected the “Advanced” trip option.

From the main menu you can also access a re-usable checklist for gear, look at all of your catches in albums organized by trip, and see all of your fishing locations on a map.

Pros And Cons

WFN Fishing Log is overall a great app that gives you a fairly intuitive way to enter your fishing data. It’s basically a simple database, although one that is well-designed and attractively decorated. Most details of a fishing trip seem to be covered, as well as numerous details for each individual catch, and the idea to be able to browse your catches as a photo album is an inspired touch.

Some other added touches are the ability to start a new fishing trip log from a location on the map, and to define locations on the map via GPS or via dragging a cross-hair icon around the actual globe to where you want it placed.

The app does have the occasional bug and crash: while writing this review I opened it up to confirm a detail and tried to take a picture of a “fish” (my laptop), but the app crashed me back to the home screen. The crashes are rare and I have never experienced a loss of data because of one. For future reference, setting the fish species before taking the picture seem to prevent a crash.

Taking pictures of your catch could also use an improvement, since you currently need to take them in landscape mode only. If you take on in portrait it will squish it to fit in a landscape format, distorting the picture.

WFN Fishing Log is a great start for a fishing expedition tracker, has an attractive fishing-themed design that is clearly professionally done, and has some novel ways of accessing your fishing database. It has a few bugs that need to be worked around (and will hopefully be updated and fixed soon), but in the meantime is a good fishing log app for the price.
