iPhone App Review: Who’s Calling Me?

iPhone App Review: Who’s Calling Me?

March 30th, 2011 by

We all have them: those strange calls from unrecognized numbers that haunt us periodically for days, often not even showing the courtesy of leaving a voicemail. There are countless reasons not to just answer and find out who it is… maybe we’re behind on a few bills, maybe it’s that girl from that class that we never called back after that one time we did that thing, maybe we just don’t like answering the phone when we don’t know who is calling.

Enter Who’s Calling Me?, a  new app from TeleQuery.Net, Inc. that aims to make your life easier by creating a dead-simple way to find out who owns that strange phone number that just won’t seem to leave you alone. Enter a number, hit the button, and it will seek out the Caller ID associated with that phone number. It’s free for the first three attempts, after which you must purchase credits from within the app in order to find more numbers.

How It Works

This is one of those times where my thumbnail description of the app in the introductory section pretty much spells out the entire functionality of the app. You literally just enter the phone number and hit the submit button, then you’re done. You get three free credits when you download the free app, and credits are used at a rate of one per phone number lookup. Further credits can be purchased for $0.99 each or at a discounted rate for purchasing greater quantities at once.

Pros And Cons

For an app so simple there are really only two criteria on which to review it: does it work, and is it useful?

The app does in fact work like a charm. I used my three free credits to test a few obscure numbers in my missed calls history and got back 100% accurate caller ID info. There’s not much more you can ask of an app that claims to return caller ID information and does, in fact, return caller ID information.

As to whether it is useful? That’s up to the individual user. There are certainly tried-and-true methods of finding out the identity of a caller, but the free methods online return hundreds of hits that must be waded through in order to find useful information (I’m thinking here of telemarketer or bill collector number searches), and the caller ID search sites that offer private caller info are for the most part decidedly not free. This app is convenient, lightning fast, and relatively inexpensive depending on how much you use it.

Who’s Calling Me? is a fantastic app, in the sense that it’s an app that’s fantastic at what it does. If you have no need for this utility then it’s obviously not for you. But if you find yourself looking up numbers a lot then first start paying your bills on time, and second download and try out this app.

Good point Ji… they only take a credit if they actually return a phone number.

And I thought the same thing, Jay. A larger bulk package would be great to offer.

  • Jay Davis

Yeah. It's a very smart app. They're only giving two free credits now. But, yes, they nailed both of the numbers I tried. One was a land line, and the other a mobile. I could only purchase five credits — max. I only wish I could buy more credits for less per credit.

Hey, developer! Please do that. You've got a great app. How about 15 credits for $5.99?

  • Ji Chun

I tried it. And, like you said, it's great. Even better, they don't ding your credits when you get back responses like "wireless caller", or "unavailable". That, to me, means it's "legit", too.
