iPhone App Review: WI Guitar

iPhone App Review: WI Guitar

March 14th, 2011 by

The promise of the new app from developer Wallander Instruments is an ambitious one: to be able to appromixate the experience of playing a guitar anywhere, at any time, using the iOS device in your pocket. It’s a bold claim for an app to make, priced at a bold point as if to back up the dream with a dream-like price tag. After taking WI Guitar for a spin for the last several days, and after handing it over for a bit to a musician friend as well to get some experienced feedback, I think I’ve come to a solid, educated conclusion on the app’s merits.

How It Works

When you first launch the app it looks like one of dozens of guitar tuner or similar apps: there is a graphic of some guitar strings, a handful of buttons with labels of chords and flats and sharps and what-have-you, and when you touch a button and strum the strings your phone makes some noise.

The real fun starts when you dive in and start touching chords and strumming the screen like a juke box hero. If you just strum the strings then the sound stops immediately once you lift you finger, but if you’re holding down a chord key then the tone resonates on like a real guitar. Slide your finger to another chord and strum again, and listen as your iPhone almost starts to sound like a real musical instrument. You can even vary where you strum the “strings”: if you strum closer to the “fretboard” the sound takes on a sharper tone, but strum just on the strings and it’s soft and gentle.

Pros And Cons

Other than the high price tag of $19.99, I can’t really find anything wrong with this app. It does what it claims to do and does it far better than I think anyone can reasonably expect. A friend who is a musician and profilic songwriter loved WI Guitar; he picked it up immediately and, after a minute of quick adjustment to how the app worked, was strumming out a seamless melody.

If you’re a musician or songwriter and would like a way to quickly strum out a melody that’s in your head, or if you simply want a great virtual guitar on your iOS device and don’t mind the steep price, then WI Guitar is a one-of-a-kind app that lets you carry a guitar in your pocket everywhere you go.
