*** New Orleans***
New Orleans is a major US port and the largest city in the state of Louisiana. The city is well known for its multicultural and multilingual heritage, cuisine, architecture, music and its annual celebrations and festivals, particularly the Mardi Gras.
The climate of New Orleans is humid subtropical with short, generally mild winters and humid summers. Hurricanes pose a severe threat to the area, and the city is particularly at risk because of its low elevation.
New Orleans is a typical American city — just a very different place with a very peculiar history. New Orleans is the best US city for live music, cocktail hours, flea markets, antique shopping, nightlife and cheap food. One can find here a vibrant urban folk culture still producing new forms and practitioners.
The French Quarter, which dates from the French and Spanish eras and is bounded by the Mississippi River, Rampart Street, Canal Street, and Esplanade Avenue, contains many popular hotels, bars, and nightclubs. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, there were 265 hotels with 38,338 rooms in the Greater New Orleans Area. Notable tourist attractions in the French Quarter include Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Market and Preservation Hall.
To tour the port, one can ride the Natchez, an authentic steamboat, which cruises the Mississippi the length of the city twice daily.”
