Description
“CONSUME WITHIN” is a brand new application for the Apple iPhone that helps households to reduce the amount of food they waste.
Able to track the expiration dates of shop bought and home made items, “CONSUME WITHIN” is beautifully simple and easy to set up for use on a daily basis.
Food Items can be added to three different locations – fridge, freezer or cupboard – and their expiration dates set individually. Each entry can be accompanied by a photograph that makes the item easy to identify when removed from storage. For all those similar looking food packages, “CONSUME WITHIN” also provides unique stickers that people can use to help them identify foods at a later date. The app alerts users daily of the foods that are about to expire within the next 3 days and displays them by location or as a single list.
The application is available now to download from Apple iTunes. The Lite version is free and allows users to monitor up to 4 items at a time, whilst the full version can monitor an unlimited number of items.
Reducing food waste is a major issue; it costs the average family with children $1000 a year and has serious environmental implications too. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.
A recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year, which is about 12 percent of the total waste stream.
In the UK 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households each year.
This App will help you save money, save the planet AND keep your fridge tidy!
