iPhone App Review: InReverse Party Game

iPhone App Review: InReverse Party Game

January 5th, 2011 by

Looking for a fun and unusual game to play for your next family game night? InReverse by Silent Media is a new and innovative party game, based on a popular Russian game show. Two teams (or two individuals) take turns singing songs and trying to identify them… by listening in reverse. But that isn’t the only twist.

How It Works

The game itself is simple to play, but the concept is a bit difficult to spell out. I myself had to actually play through an initial game (alone, sad face) before I could fully understand what the heck was going on. I’ll do my best to explain it here.

Team Two leaves the room or otherwise isolates themselves, while Team One sings a song into the app by holding down the record button. They will get a chance to hear their song played back to be sure it sounds right, and if they really can’t think of anything the app has suggestions ready to go.

Now Team Two comes back and takes over the device. They get a chance to hear the song, but in reverse. They can end the game right there and answer if they think they have it, but the real fun is if they move on to the next step.

The backwards song is divided into smaller, easier to manage segments. These smaller backwards chunks must be re-recorded from memory by Team Two (though they can listen back as many times as necessary to try and memorize the “tune”). Once all of the smaller, reverse segments have been re-recorded, they are strung back together again in the proper order and played back in entirety.

What you wind up with is an almost unintelligible song with some hint of the original melody, from which Team Two must now guess the correct original song. I know, but trust me, it makes more sense after you try it.

But Is It Any Good?

The game itself is loads of fun, though I imagine it may be even more fun if you’re totally inebriated. The app itself does the job well, though it could use a little cosmetic touching up. I thought most of the screens, while designed professionally and done very well, were a bit too busy and not very intuitive: too much reading of small text is required before you can be sure you’re pressing the right button. I think the buttons could probably be made bigger and bolder, and the screens could be cleaned up and made more clear as to what you should be doing next.

InReverse is definitely a fun game and a good app, and at the current price of free should be tried out by anyone looking for a good time.
