iPhone App Review: intelli-Diet

iPhone App Review: intelli-Diet

August 19th, 2011 by

Losing weight and staying fit gets tougher these days, as more and more of our jobs get us out of the sunlight and into a desk chair. Managing your diet and caloric intake is important, which is where intelli-Diet from developer Barracuda Partners comes in. Input your vital statistics, tell it what foods you like and what you don’t, and it will build a meal plan for you that tells you what to eat for each meal and snack, every day of the week.

How It Works

Your first step is to build a profile. This includes your weight, height, age, and gender. From this profile the app will determine your body mass index (BMI). It also helpfully tells you if you’re overweight or not, which may or may not be good news. You then factor in your general activity level, your target weight, and at what rate you would like to lose weight (if applicable) or if you simply want to maintain your current weight.

The next step is to set your meal times, including snacks in between meals, and turn on or off the meal reminders feature. Then comes the fun part: food preferences. Step through each of the food categories (Protein, Carbs, Fat, Fruit, Veggies) and turn off the foods that you don’t like, can’t eat, or just don’t want to deal with. For instance I like lamb, but don’t want to deal with buying it and preparing it on a semi-regular basis. I turn it off. Bulgur, what’s that? Off. Got through this in each category and then you are finished with your profile.

The app will either build random daily meals for you, or you can have it do a weekly meal plan and email it to yourself (broken down by day, with fancy check-boxes by each food item). This gives you a shopping list for the week and ensures you can always stick to the plan that intelli-Diet builds. Check off food items on the Today tab as you eat them at each meal, and you can also track water intake.

After you’ve built a profile you can go into the Kitchen section of the app and turn a food off. If you need to you can go back to your Today tab and rebuild the meal plan for the day (as in “Oops, I’m out of quinoa!”). You can also record your weight and view a chart of past weight checks, so you can track your goal progress. From the weight chart screen you can share your progress through email, Twitter, and Facebook.

Pros And Cons

intelli-Diet is a great idea for an app, and smartly designed and executed. At your first launch you are led step-by-step through the profile building process, and each step is easy to understand and simple to complete. The developers have done a great job of cramming a large amount of information and user interface elements onto a small screen space. There are also instructions and tips for use on every screen of the app, giving you a button to tap if you’re not quite sure what to do next.

The meal plans themselves are designed to keep you fed and happy throughout the day, while maintaining progress towards your weight goal. As with any goal worth achieving it takes some planning ahead and re-arranging of your daily routine to get it right, but the app helps with through the handy emailed weekly food planner.

The only thing missing is the ability to add your own custom foods. There is quite a lot of food included with the app, including some obscure carb sources, but it would be nice to be able to add your own food (provided you have the proper statistical information available on the food, like calorie count). For instance, my favorite fruit is not represented: the persimmon.

intelli-Diet is a fantastic diet and meal-planning app. While it would be nice to be able to add custom foods to the list, there is a large enough variety of meats, fats, carbs, and produce to keep your meals and snacks teeming with variety and good taste for several months.
