iPhone App Review: Private ME

iPhone App Review: Private ME

November 11th, 2012 by

I think we’ve all used our iPhones as a mirror at one time or another. There are even apps specifically designed to let you use your phone for that purpose, though they work with mixed success.

I usually turn my phone OFF and hold up the screen to look at myself in the reflection, and it somehow never occurred to me to use the built-in front-facing camera. Private ME is a modified camera app that launches immediately into front-facing mode so you can see use the phone as a true mirror, with the image even flipped left-to-right so your actions and appearance are actually mirrored.

How It Works

Private ME launches quickly into “mirror mode” with a single tap. You can also snap freeze-frames by tapping the large prominent button at the bottom. This lets you angle the phone or your head to get a look at those spots that you normally can’t see in a mirror. The app then gives you the choice of whether to keep the frozen pic or not.

There is also a unique “privacy bar” on the freeze-frame image, that lets you draw a black “anonymizer” over your eyes (or wherever), should you ever have the desire to take a photo for posting but not want to be fully recognizable.

Pros And Cons

Private ME is basically just a modified camera app, and it does its job very well. Using the phone as a mirror is a great idea, and the app does a good job of capitalizing on the features that a phone can do which a standard mirror cannot. I’m always trying to see the back of my head in the mirror, yet somehow never thought to just use my phone for that purpose. The nice thing about Private ME is that it doesn’t automatically store all of those snapped “pictures”, so your Camera Roll isn’t cluttered with random shots of the back of your head (or sideburns, or butt, or whatever).

Private ME takes the mirror into the modern era, letting your phone do the job that a standard mirror could never do. It also takes pictures and lets you do those black bars over your eyes, which is great if you’ve been looking for something like that, too. It’s available now in the App Store for $0.99.
