iPhone App Review: Speak2do

iPhone App Review: Speak2do

September 7th, 2011 by

Recording voice memos on your iPhone is easy with the built-in recording app, but lacks the ability to organize your memos. The Voice Memos app is pretty but it’s not very practical. Speak2do from developer A. Yosher Engineering LTD aims to remedy that fault by letting you use your voice memos as a sort of to-do list. By creating groups for each task and organizing your recordings by group, you can play them back as a sort of audio task list, marking them as “Done” and thereby deleting them as you finish them.

How It Works

The main app screen is the screen with the group folder icons. Tapping a group brings up the record screen, already in record mode. All you do is tap the big green check mark when you’re done and it’s added to the list in that folder. To listen back to your recordings you slide a toggle switch on the main screen to playback mode, then open up the folders to listen back to your “list”. If an item is done you can tap the green check and it will be deleted. If not, tap the Next button and listen to the next recording on that list.

If you accidentally delete a recording you can go into the Menu and retrieve it. The menu is also where you can edit groups, add groups, adjust how long the app keeps old recordings, etc.

Pros And Cons

Speak2do does a great job of reducing the recording of a voice memo down to a simple tap. If all you want is that ability, you can just delete all but one group in the list and use that as a “one-touch record” button. It’s great how the recording automatically starts without any further input after the record screen comes up. I also liked the idea that each recording is an item in a to-do list, and by tapping “Done” you delete the recording. Rather than showing you the standard list of recordings that only have a time and date as a description, or bothering you with naming a each in a list of recordings that you won’t keep for very long anyway, the app just has you listen back to the recordings and delete them as needed.

The only thing I would like to see is a badge icon on each group folder, showing you how many recordings are in each. The folder icon gets larger when there is at least one recording in it, but if you have a recording in each folder then they will look identical. There should be some indication of how many recordings are in each folder so that you don’t have to open each one to see if it’s full of incomplete recordings that need attention or just has one lone item that you’ve forgotten to delete.

Speak2do is a great improvement over the standard voice memo recording apps. Rather than dealing with lists of recordings that are either too vague to be useful or too time consuming to name, you deal with groups of recordings around similar themes that you mark off as done when they’re all completed. It’s a great idea for an app if you’ve been looking for a better way to record memos.
